Young Andover woman desperately needs second lung transplant, dinner/dance to help with costs

Andover, Mass., Jan. 23, 2012 – Ashley Dias once again needs a lifesaving double-lung transplant, but the costs are overwhelming. Volunteers are planning a dinner/dance to help.

In 1985, Dias was born with cystic fibrosis (CF); she previously underwent a double-lung transplant in 2001 and a kidney transplant in 2005.

A double-lung transplant costs approximately $650,000. Even with health coverage, Dias faces considerable medical expenses related to her transplant. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of her post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

To overcome these financial challenges, Dias turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“My heart goes out to Ashley and her family,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “Most of us take the act of breathing for granted, but every single breath is a struggle for Ashley. On top of that, she has the additional stress of soaring medical expenses. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping Ashley raise the necessary funds so she can concentrate on her health without constantly worrying about the costs.”

Volunteers are planning “Breathe Easy for Ashley,” a dinner/dance on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Andover Country Club, 60 Canterbury St. Andover. Tickets are $75 a person and include soup, salad, entrée, dessert and coffee. A cash bar will be available. The event will include silent and live auctions and many raffles. Auction items include gift certificates to local hot spot restaurants, gold and diamond jewelry, sports memorabilia, a stay in a private oceanfront home and much more.
