Prayer breakfast in honor of local transplant patient

Oklahoma City, Okla., Jan. 13, 2015 – In 2013, LaVeris Henderson, of Norman, was diagnosed with renal failure, which developed because his kidneys were underdeveloped when he was born prematurely. He also suffers from hypertension and anemia as a result of renal failure. His kidney function has rapidly worsened, and doctors now say a kidney transplant is essential to his survival.

Both of his parents also suffer from hypertension, and his mother is a kidney transplant recipient.

The average kidney transplant costs nearly $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, which will cover the transplant itself, Henderson, 28, faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to his survival as the transplant.

For fundraising expertise and guidance, Henderson and his family turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“I’m hopeful that LaVeris will receive his transplant soon,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “I know he just wants to be well enough to spend more quality time with his wife and their three young children. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping him raise the funds he needs to focus on his health and happiness, not his bills.”

Saturday, Jan. 24 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., volunteers are holding a prayer breakfast at Avery Chapel AME, 1425 N. Kelham Ave. in Oklahoma City.

Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door, and all proceeds will go to NFT in Henderson’s honor.
