Man to run 48.6 miles in honor of wife awaiting transplant

Summerfield, N.C., Dec. 8, 2015 – This holiday season, Megan Calloway, of Summerfield, is awaiting a gift more special than all the rest.

Doctors say she needs a life-changing kidney transplant.

During an annual physical, lab results revealed Calloway’s kidney function had declined, and she was referred to a specialist. After numerous tests and a biopsy, she was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a disease that had gone undetected for years and severely damaged her kidneys.

“As her husband, there are times I feel a little helpless in this journey,” explains Erick Calloway. “When you are not the one actually going through the tests, doctors’ visits and getting the news, you feel more like a spectator at times than the support you want to be.”

He decided to get off the bench and use his abilities to help his wife. He’s been training for the 2016 Dopey Challenge, a 4-day running event at Walt Disney World, which will take place in January.

Each day, the mileage gets longer—starting with a 5K, then a 10K, followed by a half-marathon, and finally, a full marathon on the fourth day. He’ll run a total of 48.6 in honor of Megan, and he hopes to fundraise for her, as well.

The average kidney transplant costs nearly $250,000. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications.

For fundraising expertise and guidance, the Calloways turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, Tenn. that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“Megan and Erick are such a sweet couple,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “I think it’s amazing that he has been training for such a grueling feat. It’s a truly inspirational way for him to be a part of her journey! At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping Megan and Erick raise the funds they need to afford her lifesaving care and treatment.”
