Local woman receives lifesaving transplant

Moore, Okla., April 9, 2012 – Sherrie Autry, of Norman, received a lifesaving liver transplant in February. While she is thrilled to have received a second chance at life, she now faces a lifetime of expenses to ensure that her new liver stays healthy.

In 2001, Autry, 58, was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a disease that caused her liver’s bile ducts to swell and scar. Doctors said a liver transplant was critical to her survival.

The average liver transplant costs approximately $575,000. Even though her health insurance covered the cost of the transplant itself, she still faces significant medical expenses related to the surgery. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to her survival as the transplant itself.

To help alleviate the financial burden, Autry turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance with some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“We’re all thrilled that Sherrie received her transplant,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “But most people don’t realize how expensive a transplant can be. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping Sherrie raise the necessary funds so she can focus on living a happy and healthy life, not worrying about soaring medical expenses. ”

Sunday, April 21 from 2 to 5 p.m., volunteers are holding a bowl-a-thon at AMF Bowling Center, 420 SW 6th St. in Moore.

Entry is $30 per bowler, and each participant will bowl three games. The event will also include a silent auction.
