Local woman awaiting transplant

Scottsville, Va., Nov. 4, 2014 – In the late 80s, Leah Stockton’s kidneys were damaged during the birth of her son. Though she was able to maintain kidney function for more than 20 years, her kidneys began to fail in 2013. Doctors say a kidney transplant is necessary.

While Stockton, 58, awaits her transplant, she endures regular dialysis treatments, which take a toll on her quality of life.

Stockton, of Schuyler, recently reconnected with Jeanie, an old classmate she hadn’t seen in 40 years, and while they were catching up, Jeanie learned her friend needed a transplant. As it turned out, the friends share the same blood and tissue type, and Jeanie is undergoing the testing process in hopes of being the perfect donor match.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, which will cover the cost of the transplant itself, Stockton faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant.

To overcome these financial challenges, Stockton and her family turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.

“I’m hopeful that Leah receives her new kidney soon,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “It’s wonderful to see the support she’s receiving from so many loved ones, like Jeanie and those planning this wonderful event. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping her focus on her health instead of the mounting medical bills, which can be so overwhelming.”

Saturday, Nov. 15 from 5 to 8 p.m., volunteers are holding a spaghetti dinner and silent auction at the Scottsville Rescue Squad, 805 Irish Rd.

Dinner is $10 a person and $7 for children 10 and under.
