Lakeland, Fla., Jan. 9, 2012 – Christine Curti, 49, was born with only one kidney, and now that kidney is failing, as she suffers from end-stage renal disease. Doctors say a kidney transplant is essential to her survival, and she has been enduring daily, nine-hour dialysis treatments for more than two years.

Because Curti, of New Port Richey, knows how frightening it is to face such a difficult health crisis, she hopes to one day become an advocate to help others going through similar circumstances. She is currently volunteering with a local doctor in hopes of setting up a support group for other patients. But right now, she is asking for help from the community.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

When she receives her transplant, Curti and her husband, Kevin, must temporarily relocate more than 100 miles from their home to be near the transplant center for up to six weeks, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, lodging and missed time at work.

To help alleviate the financial burden, Curti turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance with some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“My heart goes out to Christine,” said Laura Hughes, NFT fundraising consultant. “Often people don’t realize how expensive a transplant can be. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping Christine raise the necessary funds so she can focus on living a happy and healthy life, not worrying about soaring medical expenses. ”

Volunteers and members of a local Moose Lodge are holding a sock hop dance that will help offset the expenses.

The fundraiser will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the South Lakeland Moose Lodge #2295, 6125 S. Florida Ave. in Lakeland. The evening will include entertainment from KC & the Vocal Chords, auctions, a cash drawing and a raffle.
