Local doula to donate kidney to toddler

Des Moines, Iowa, March 22, 2013 – Before he was even born, Teddy Reid’s parents knew there was a problem with his kidneys. What they didn’t know, however, was just how severe the issue was.

When he was just six days old, Teddy’s parents learned he was in kidney failure and would need a kidney transplant. Although he is on the transplant waiting list, he cannot receive his transplant until he gains enough weight to sustain the operation.

The Reid family was thrilled to learn that local doula Tiffany Tice, who is a friend of Teddy’s mother, Sarah, was a perfect match to donate one of her own kidneys to save Teddy’s life. The surgery is scheduled to take place on May 9.

For now, Teddy’s little body is working so hard to stay alive, that he doesn’t have the energy left to grow or learn how to crawl, like other 1-year-olds. However, he does enjoy snuggling, listening to stories and a game of peek-a-boo.

The average kidney transplant costs $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, the Reids face significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of Teddy’s life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications can be very costly, and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. When they travel to the hospital for evaluations and check-ups, the family incurs substantial expenses, as they live more than 100 miles away, adding to the financial strain.

To help alleviate the financial burden, the Reids turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance with some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“Everyone at NFT has just fallen in love with this little boy, and we so badly want to see him get better,” said Laura Hughes, NFT fundraising consultant. “We’re dedicated to helping Teddy’s parents, family and friends rally together to raise the funds they need, so they can focus on watching him grow up without worrying about medical bills.”

To help alleviate the expenses, an online auction is happening on Facebook until April 22. To see auction items and to place bids, search for the Prayers for Baby Theodore page on the social networking site.
Some auction items include spa gift certificates, handmade clothes, Pilates lessons, gourmet cupcakes, music lessons and work by local artists.
