Indiana restaurant to help kidney transplant patient

Versailles, Ind., Oct. 6, 2016– In 2010, Tim Tallman, of Holton, was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, which runs in his family.

He has also experienced vision loss and battles diabetes, neuropathy, sleep apnea, asthma and a mild case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical. While awaiting his transplant, Tallman, 54, endures regular dialysis treatments, which take a toll on his quality of life.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $335,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

For fundraising expertise and guidance, Tallman turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, Tenn. that helps patients offset their transplant-related expenses through their community-based fundraising program.

“I’m hopeful that Tim will receive his transplant soon,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “I know he wants nothing more than to be healthy and active again, and at NFT, we want to help him raise the funds he needs afford his lifesaving treatment and care.”

To help offset his expenses, Gold Star Chili, 326 S Main St. in Versailles, will donate 10 percent of its profits to NFT in Tallman’s honor on Monday, Oct. 17 from 4 to 9 p.m.
