Help the Earth and a local transplant patient at the same time

Collinsville, Conn., April 11, 2013 – Spring is in full swing, and April is a time when we welcome the beginnings of brightly colored flowers and warming temperatures.

Many will also celebrate Earth Day on April 22, and this year there is a way to help the environment and a local transplant patient at the same time.

Bob Glynn, of Collinsville, needs a lifesaving lung transplant. In 2008, he began experiencing extreme fatigue, and he knew something just wasn’t right. After a visit with his doctor and a lung biopsy, he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

A lung transplant is essential to his survival. Doctors don’t know why he developed this lung disease, but Glynn, 59, hopes to use this opportunity to educate people about the vital need for organ donors.

A lung transplant costs approximately $550,000. Even though his health insurance will cover the transplant itself, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to his survival as the transplant.

To overcome these financial challenges, Glynn and his family turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“My heart goes out to Bob and his family,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “Bob has such a kind spirit, and I’m hopeful that he’ll receive his transplant soon. This event is such a wonderful way to help Bob and do a little something for the environment.”

On April 27 and 28, volunteers are holding a refundable bottle and can drive in Glynn’s honor.

Bags and boxes of returnables can be dropped off at the St. Patrick Church parking lot, 7 Burlington Ave. in Collinsville. Volunteers will unload bottles and cans, and arrangements for home/business pick-up can be made by calling

Janet Glynn at 860-463-8355 or glynn_cantonct@msn.com.
