Fundraiser to help local community volunteer awaiting transplant

New Smyrna Beach, Fla., May 3, 2016 – In 2008, Jamii Martin, of Cocoa, was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, and her kidneys were further damaged during prep for medical testing.

Doctors now say a kidney transplant is necessary. While awaiting her transplant, Martin, 36, endures regular dialysis treatments, which can leave her exhausted.

The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications, which are critical to her survival.

This has been an overwhelming time for Martin, who would love nothing more than to turn her volunteer work of helping at-risk teens and serving as an advocate for dialysis patients into a long-term career.

For fundraising support, Martin turned to NFT for assistance with some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“Jamii has such a genuinely giving spirit,” said Samantha Palazolo, NFT fundraising consultant. “She has spent countless hours helping others in need, and I’m hopeful the community will support her in the same way. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping her raise the funds she needs to afford her lifesaving treatment and care.”

To help offset her expenses, volunteers are hosting “Friends Unite Fundraiser Raffle,” Saturday, May 14 beginning at 3 Lost Lagoon Wings and Grill, 2004 N. Dixie Freeway in New Smyrna Beach.

Raffle tickets are $5 each, and many local businesses have donated items for the fundraiser.
