Former Winston-Salem hair dresser awaiting new heart

Winston-Salem, N.C., Aug. 5, 2014 – In 2000, Linda Blue Pate, 67, suffered a heart attack and learned the bottom half of her heart was no longer functioning properly. A heart transplant is critical to her survival.

Doctors have placed an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to help improve her heart function while awaiting her transplant.

The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, which will cover the cost of the transplant itself, Pate faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant.

To be closer to the hospital while awaiting her transplant, Pate and her husband, Bobby, have relocated to Sanford, incurring substantial travel expenses. Because of her declining health, Pate had to stop working as a hair dresser, a job she loved for many years, adding to her financial strain.

To overcome these financial challenges, Pate and her family turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.

“My heart goes out to Linda,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “I know she wants nothing more than to spend many more happy, healthy years with Bobby and their children and grandchildren. At NFT, we’re here to help as much as she needs us. We want her to focus on her health, not her medical bills.”
