Dinner and auction in honor of local transplant patient

Michael Holt, of Belmont, N.C., has suffered from diabetes for years, and he was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2012. Just two months after the diagnosis, he began enduring regular dialysis treatments.
Doctors say a kidney/pancreas transplant is necessary.

The average kidney/pancreas transplant costs approximately $475,000. Even with health insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant itself, Holt, 34, faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

For fundraising expertise and guidance, Holt turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, Tenn. that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“I’m hopeful this will be a wonderfully successful event,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant. “I know Michael wants nothing more than to be healthy enough to be as active as he once was, and at NFT, we’re dedicated to helping him raise the funds he needs to afford his lifesaving treatment and care.”

To help offset his medical costs, volunteers are holding a spaghetti dinner and silent auction on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lowell Free Will Baptist Church, 3010 Lowell Rd. in Gastonia.

The dinner plates range in price from $8 to $5, and baked goods will be available for purchase.
