Comedy show to help Lynn transplant patient with expenses

Saugus, Mass., April 9, 2012 – Donna Boudreau wants nothing more than to take a deep breath. She needs a double-lung transplant, but the costs are overwhelming. Volunteers are holding a comedy show fundraiser to help offset her expenses.

In 1999, a lung biopsy and multiple tests revealed that Boudreau suffers from scleroderma, an autoimmune disorder that has caused irreversible damage to her lungs. Although two years of chemotherapy initially suppressed the disease, her illness eventually worsened, and she was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Doctors now say a double-lung transplant is essential to her survival.

A double-lung transplant costs approximately $650,000. Even with health insurance, Boudreau, 55, faces significant medical expenses related to her transplant. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month—and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Because her transplant center in Pittsburgh is nearly 600 miles from her home, she incurs substantial expenses each time she travels to the hospital for evaluations and check-ups, adding to her financial strain.

To overcome these financial challenges, Boudreau turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

“Facing a serious illness is terrifying in itself,” said Claire Prince, NFT fundraising consultant, “but Donna has the added stress of mounting medical bills. At NFT, we’re dedicated to helping Donna raise the necessary funds so she can concentrate on her health without constantly worrying about her medical expenses.”

Volunteers are planning a comedy show fundraiser Wednesday, April 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Kowloon Restaurant, 948 Broadway, Rt. 1 N. in Saugus. Tickets are $30 and include the show, a buffet dinner, raffles for gift baskets, arts and crafts available for purchase and a silent auction for sports memorabilia. The show will feature comedians Paul Gilligan and Sal Voltano. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
