5K to raise funds for 7-month-old heart transplant recipient

Paris, Texas, Oct. 25, 2012 – Little Aubrie Miller began fighting for her life before she was even born. In February, during a routine ultrasound, her mother learned Aubrie suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy.

After she was born on March 14, little Aubrie was immediately transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas for treatment and care. Doctors said a heart transplant was critical to her survival.

Thankfully, she received her lifesaving transplant on May 22, and doctors are thrilled with her progress in recovery. Aubrie was able to go home with her family on Aug. 16, and she is gaining weight, growing steadily, and her heart echo is perfect.

The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million. Although her health insurance will cover the transplant itself, her family will still face expenses for follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. Post-transplant medications can be very costly, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

The Millers will incur substantial expenses after when they travel back for follow-up care and doctors’ appointments, as they live 150 miles from the hospital.

“Everyone at NFT is so happy about how well this precious girl is doing,” said Kay Horne, fundraising consultant for the National Foundation for Transplants. “But many people don’t realize there is a lifetime of costs related to transplant care, including regular check-ups and vital medications. I know the Millers have been so grateful for the support of the community, and we want to see them raise the funds necessary so they don’t ever have to worry about Aubrie’s medical expenses.”

To overcome these financial challenges, the Millers turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the community is invited to attend the “Aubrie Miller Heart and Sole 5K” at Trail de Paris to fundraise for the Millers’ medical expenses.

The event will kick off at 8 a.m., and the entry fee is $25 per person.

Medals will be awarded for the winners of each category, and there will also be face painting for children.
