Transplant Type - Kidney
In January 2009, Victor Kish was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and scarring of the kidneys. Upon diagnosis, Victor was immediately put on dialysis, which he endured four hours a day. Doctors said a kidney transplant was his only hope.
Two of Victor's sisters were determined to be matches for him, and his transplant was scheduled twice. Both times, they had to cancel the transplant after doctors discovered both sisters also suffered from kidney problems.
Victor's wife, Monica, was a match and donated a kidney to save his life in August 2009.
Despite his struggles, Victor is optimistic about the future. He and Monica have four children, and he looks forward to regaining his strength so he can participate in family activities and. return to his hobbies of hiking and mountain biking.
Unfortunately, Victor's new life came at a very high price. The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. But that's only the beginning. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
You can help.
