Transplant Type - Kidney
When Toni was just 12 years old, she came down with strep throat. Although it was unknown for a few years, the illness caused her to contract glomerulonephritis, a disease causing inflammation of the kidneys. Toni had her first kidney transplant in 1991. Sadly, doctors have told her another kidney transplant is essential to her survival. She has been on the transplant waiting list for three years. While she is waiting for a lifesaving transplant, Toni must endure dialysis treatments at home for 10 hours every night.
Despite everything, Toni tries to stay active and remain optimistic about the future. After receiving her first transplant, Toni participated in the U.S. Transplant games in Atlanta where she took home a gold and silver medal. Her love of singing and playing the guitar helps her keep a positive attitude while waiting for her second chance at life.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Toni faces significant medical expenses related to her transplant. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month-and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
Although Toni is a certified pharmacy technician, she is unable to work because of her illness. This obstacle has added to her financial strain.
