Transplant Type - Lung
In 2000, Ross, a devoted father, was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Although this is a genetic disease, there is no history of the illness in his family. Doctors have told Ross a double-lung transplant is critical to his survival.
Ross was once a very active man who enjoyed daily activities such as running and working out, but since his diagnosis, his life has completely changed. After working for many years as a carpenter, a job he loved very much, he was forced to quit because the dust could cause further damage to his lungs. He worked in real estate and mortgages for a while, but even that proved to be too much for him. Ross looks forward to his lifesaving transplant so that he can participate in his favorite activities without limitations. He especially looks forward to being able to breathe on his own once again, without depending on an oxygen tank.
A double-lung transplant costs approximately $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Ross will face significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Before he can even be placed on the transplant waiting list at the Cleveland Clinic, Ross must raise a $10,000 deposit. Because he lives more than 250 miles away from the transplant center, he incurs significant costs for travel, food and lodging when he has appointments. After receiving his transplant, Ross must temporarily relocate to Ohio for at least 12 weeks, adding to his financial strain.
