Transplant Type - Stem Cell

We are thrilled to report that Rose received her lifesaving stem cell transplant in November 2009!

Rose was diagnosed in 2006 with systemic scleroderma, a rare and chronic autoimmune disease which casuses the connective tissues in the body to harden. Initially affecting the skin, the disease will eventually damage the lungs and other internal organs. Rose experienced shortness of breath and was only able to work a few hours at a time from her home.

Until a few years ago there was no effective treatment to stop the progression of her disease. However, in recent years many scleroderma patients have been significantly helped by a transplant using stem cells taken from their own bone marrow. Rose's doctor knew she could benefit from the treatment, which was performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Unfortunately, Rose's insurance will not cover the transplant that is estimated at over $150,000. Many insurance companies consider the procedure too experimental for the treatment of scleroderma.

Without insurance coverage, Rose was required to have a deposit of at least $90,000 before the procedure needed to save her life could be scheduled.

You can help.
