Transplant Type - Liver
This Virginia resident was the victim of an accidental shooting more than 30 years ago. When he was treated for the gunshot, he received a blood transfusion. Although he didn't know it at the time, the blood was contaminated, and Ralph contracted Hepatitis C. The disease went undetected until 2003, but by that time it had already taken a toll on his liver.
In 2009, Ralph was diagnosed with liver cancer. Doctors said a liver transplant was his only hope for a second chance at life. Fortunately, he received his lifesaving liver transplant in August 2009.
Because his illness greatly limits the things he can do, Ralph is unable to work. He has always been a hard worker and misses being able to go to work each day.
Despite his struggles, he remains positive and enjoys spending time with his family. Ralph looks forward to life after his transplant in hopes that it will restore his health and energy so he can have more time with his wife and stepchildren.
A liver transplant costs approximately $500,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Ralph will face significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month-and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
