Transplant Type - Kidney

In January 2008, just days after his 18th birthday, Mikey came down with what he thought was the flu. But when he began to experience uncontrollable nosebleeds, a test showed that his blood pressure was dangerously high. Mikey's life changed in an instant. He went from taking AP classes, working at Louie's Pizza and getting ready for college, to fighting for his life.

After a month in the hospital, Mikey was diagnosed with Wegener granulomatosis, a rare autoimmune disorder which inflames the blood vessels and restricts blood flow to critical organs. The cause of the disease is unknown. Aggressive medications allowed Mikey to recover from the disorder, but his kidneys had already suffered permanent damage. Doctors said a kidney transplant was his only hope for a second chance at life.

Fortunately, he received his lifesaving kidney transplant in May 2009.

Throughout the entire process, Mikey remained positive. He was determined not to let his illness keep him from pursuing his dreams. He would like nothing more than to be a full-time college student and be healthy enough to snowboard again. But he needs your help.

A kidney transplant costs more than $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Mikey faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
