Transplant Type - Lung

Marye, a devoted mother, has faced serious health complications for many years. In 2001, when her son was just 6 months old, she began experiencing fatigue and fainting spells. She was misdiagnosed before finally learning that she suffers from pulmonary hypertension. Her illness requires her to receive supplemental oxygen and IV medication 24 hours a day, and the medication has many painful side effects. Marye's doctors say a double lung transplant is her only hope for a second chance at life.

Despite her struggles, Marye has a remarkable outlook on life and has high hopes for the future. She views each day as a blessing, although every day brings about immense pain and suffering. She cherishes each moment with her 8-year-old son and looks forward to the lifesaving transplant that will allow her to play a more active role in his life.

A double lung transplant costs approximately $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Marye faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications to care for her new lungs. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Marye's health prevents her from working, adding to her financial strain. She also faces significant travel expenses, as the hospital is located in St. Louis, 450 miles from her home. She must relocate to St. Louis until she receives her transplant and will have to stay there for several months following the surgery.
