Transplant Type - Kidney

In 1990, Lois was diagnosed with a genetic kidney disease. This devoted mother managed to control her illness with diet and medication for several years. However, in 2004 her kidney function began to decline. Doctors said a kidney transplant was her only hope for a second chance at life.

Lois has spent her life in service to others. She spent more than 20 years working with the developmentally disabled as a family support worker and enjoyed her job very much. Lois has also been an active volunteer for a number of organizations, and even spent two years in Peru as a volunteer teacher.

Thankfully, Lois received her lifesaving kidney transplant in December 2008. She is grateful for her new lease on life, although she still faces a long road ahead both physically and financially. Lois remains optimistic about the future. She plans to spend more time with her friends and family, and continue her volunteer work once she's able. But she needs your help.

A kidney transplant costs more than $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Lois faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. It is estimated that in the short term, Lois needs at least $40,000 just to cover her medical expenses.
