Transplant Type - Lung
We are so sorry to report that Kathleen lost her health battle in January 2012. Our hearts go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.
Kathleen battled lung disease for more than 10 years, and then learned her condition progressed to cystic fibrosis syndrome and end-stage bronchiectasis. Kathleen was dependent on an oxygen tank, which greatly limited her mobility. Doctors said a double-lung transplant was essential, and she underwent the surgery in September of 2011.
Kathleen spent her life in service to others. She was an elementary teacher for more than 20 years and provided outstanding guidance to her students. Despite her illness, she dedicated herself to caring for aging relatives and was a constant source of strength for her family.
Even the medical professionals who cared for Kathleen were touched by her optimism. Personnel at Cleveland Clinic marveled at the way Kathleen made a conscious choice each day to fight back against her illness. Those she came in contact with were amazed at her ability to keep a positive attitude in the face of great obstacles.
Although her health was steadily declining, Kathleen always had high hopes for the future. She was thankful for the support of her loved ones and hoped to spend more time with her family and friends. But now, they need your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Kathleen's family faces significant expenses for her follow-up care and medications.
Because the transplant took place 700 miles from her home and she was hospitalized for two months before receiving her transplant, she also incurred substantial travel expenses.
