Transplant Type - Kidney
In 2005, Julie was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, an autoimmune disease that affects her kidneys. By the time she learned diagnosis, her disease has already progressed to the point that she needed to begin dialysis treatments, which she currently endures for 9 hours every night. Because of her illness, she has developed high blood pressure, chronic anemia, high cholesterol and anxiety.
Doctors have told Julie a kidney transplant is critical to her survival, and she is on the transplant waiting list at Florida Hospital.
Despite her health problems, Julie constantly strives to do what is best for her family. She and her husband, Jamal, take care of her elderly mother in their home. Julie attends classes on night a week to obtain her Master's degree so she can better provide for her family. She wants nothing more than to feel happy and healthy once again. But she needs your help.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Julie faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
Because of her deteriorating health, Julie had to stop working, adding to her financial strain.
