Transplant Type - Kidney
After an accident burned his arm, John went to the emergency room. Lab results showed signs of severe problems, and he was referred to a nephrologist by his doctor. Additional tests revealed John, a diabetic, was suffering from chronic kidney disease. Doctors have told him a kidney transplant is critical to his survival. He has worked hard to lose the 70 pounds keeping him from being added to the transplant waiting list, and he is only five pounds away from his goal. While awaiting his lifesaving transplant, he must endure regular dialysis treatments, which leave him exhausted.
Although this has been a very challenging time, John is thankful that it has opened the eyes of his friends and family to become more aware of their own health. John and Marcia, his wife of more than 25 years, have five children, seven grandchildren and two more on the way. He looks forward to returning to work and providing for his family again after receiving his lifesaving transplant. More than anything, he wants to spend many more years with Marcia traveling, spending time with friends and watching their grandchildren grow up. But he needs your help.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, John faces significant medical expenses related to his transplant. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
John worked very hard for many years as a laborer in the oil industry, but his declining health forced him to stop working, adding to his financial strain.
