Transplant Type - Kidney
We are so happy to report that Bruce received his kidney transplant in November 2009!
Bruce was recently diagnosed with end-stage renal disease and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, causing his kidneys to fail. Doctors told Bruce a kidney transplant was his only hope for survival. He was added to the transplant waiting list at St. Mary's Hospital in Michigan in August.
Bruce, who still provides for his family as a construction contractor, hopes to work as long as his health allows. He looks forward to having more energy now that he has received his transplant so he can continue doing the activities he loves, such as water and snow skiing, snowboarding and sailing. He has been a ski coach for many years, teaching kids from 4-18 years old. He loves teaching the kids and always goes the extra mile to ensure they have fun while learning as much about skiing as they possibly can. Bruce wants nothing more than to spend many more years with his wife, Kelli, watching their children grow up and playing with their two dogs, Jack and Bart.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Bruce will face significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Bruce currently lives 150 miles away from his transplant center, so he will incur travel and lodging expenses, adding to his financial strain.
