Transplant Type - Bone Marrow
We are thrilled to report that Bruce received his transplant in July 2010 and is doing well!
In 2006, Bruce went to the emergency room because of severe sinusitis. Although he was battling a severe sinus infection, doctors were much more concerned about his white blood cell count and immediately sent him to a larger hospital. Soon after, Bruce was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML.) After receiving chemotherapy, Bruce was in remission, but he relapsed in 2008 and had to endure two more rounds of chemo.
Doctors told Bruce a bone marrow transplant was critical to his survival. After a donor match was found, the donor's bone marrow was harvested, treated and transplanted into Bruce's body.
Although this has been a challenging time, Bruce is grateful for the opportunity to receive a second chance at life. He is thankful he can still enjoy some of his favorite activities, such as hiking, camping and reading, although he can only do these things in moderation. Bruce keeps a positive outlook on life and hopes to spend many more years with Sharon, his wife of 35 years, enjoying a normal life again without worrying about a relapse. But he needs your help.
A bone marrow transplant costs approximately $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Bruce faces significant medical expenses. He will need vital medications and follow-up care to ensure his body accepts the new bone marrow.
Bruce has continued to work seasonal jobs but must soon stop working to move closer to the transplant center in Dallas. Although Sharon plans to work as much as she can in Dallas, she will stop working once Bruce receives his transplant so she can focus on being his full-time caregiver during recovery.
You can help.
