Transplant Type - Bone Marrow
We are thrilled to report that Brian received his bone marrow transplant in August 2010! His oldest brother was a perfect donor match and donated his own bone marrow to save his brother's life.
In 2008, Brian was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia after experiencing skin infections, extreme fatigue and a large lesion on his neck. Because of his disease, he often experiences sharp pains in his leg and back and must take medications to alleviate the severe discomfort. Doctors told Brian an allogeneic bone marrow transplant was critical to his survival.
Brian and his wife, Mary, are the perfect example of best friends. They do everything together, whether they are operating their charter boat business, driving as a team for an over-the-road trucking business or working as salmon and halibut fishermen in Alaska. The anxiety caused by his illness has taken a toll on them both, but they are determined to overcome this battle and spend many more years together. He looks forward to feeling well enough to enjoy his favorite activities of fishing, boating and kayaking more often. More than anything, Brian wants to have a brighter future and peace of mind once again. But he needs your help.
An allogeneic bone marrow transplant costs approximately $650,000. And that's only the beginning. Brian faces significant medical expenses related to his transplant. He will need follow-up care and medications to ensure his body accepts the new bone marrow.
Brian's illness forced him to stop working, adding to his financial strain. Brian and Mary have relocated to Gainesville to be closer to the transplant center, and they'll have to stay there for at least three months, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
You can help.
