Transplant Type - Kidney
Billy Truiett was diagnosed in 2003 with high blood pressure. After many tests, doctors discovered his kidneys were functioning at only 65 percent. A month later, his kidney function was even worse, and he immediately began dialysis treatments. Doctors say a kidney transplant is his only hope.
Despite his struggles, Billy is optimistic about the future. He and his wife, Torey, have three children, and Billy looks forward to being active in his children's lives again. Billy is a traveling minister, but his health now prevents him from traveling. He had just begun training to become a pilot when he became ill, and he hopes to continue his training when his health improves.
Sadly, Billy's hope for a new life comes at a very high price. The average kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. But that's only the beginning. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Billy is facing severe limitations related to his insurance. His doctors say he needs to be transplanted at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, but Alabama Medicaid will not cover the costs for a transplant in another state.
