Transplant Type - Stem Cell
In 2008, Billy noticed a small, swollen lymph node, but was not too concerned at first. However, when the area continued to swell and became sore, he visited his doctor. A round of antibiotics didn't change the status of the swollen lymph node, and his doctor arranged for a biopsy. After waiting for what seemed like weeks on end, he received shocking news. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (ALL), and doctors said a stem cell transplant was critical to his survival.
Thankfully, his older brother was a perfect match and donated his own stem cells in June 2010 to save Billy's life.
Although he is recovering well, Billy has experienced his fair share of complications, including mouth sores and painful bone aches due to fluid retention. These complications could be a result of his medications or the chemotherapy and three days of total body irradiation used to prepare his body for the transplant.
Despite these challenges, Billy has remained optimistic. He and his wife, Mindy, have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from their friends and family. Since his diagnosis, someone has always been willing to help, whether they were cleaning out gutters or hanging the family's Christmas lights. Billy loves spending quality time with his young sons, ages 7 and 5, riding bikes and playing golf. More than anything, Billy looks forward to spending many more years with Mindy, watching their sons grow up. But they need your help.
A stem cell transplant costs more than $675,000. And that's only the beginning. Billy faces significant medical expenses related to his transplant. He will need follow-up care and medications to ensure that his body accepts the new stem cells.
Billy has also been proud to be a part of his community's entrepreneurial spirit, as he owns an audio-visual business. Since his diagnosis, he has only been able to work a fraction of his typical hours, adding to his family's financial strain. To be near the transplant center during the recovery process, he has relocated more than 150 miles from their home, incurring substantial costs for travel, food and lodging.
