Transplant Type - Intestine

Throughout his childhood, Andy endured kidney problems, which forced him to go on dialysis from time to time. In 2005, he suffered a heart attack and required four stents.

In 2008, Andy suffered two intestinal blood clots, resulting in the removal of his intestines. He was forced to rely on a colostomy bag and feedings through a tube for nutrients.

Thankfully, he received a small bowel transplant in June of 2009 and is recovering well.

Andy, a single father, wants nothing more than to spend many more years with his only daughter, Sarah, who he calls the "light of his life."

A small bowel transplant costs approximately $500,000. Even with health insurance, Andy faces significant medical expenses related to his transplant, including travel to his transplant center, lodging, co-pays and medication. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and vital daily anti-rejection medications, which can cost up to $5,000 per month. These medications are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
