Transplant Type - Heart

In April 2009, Adelia's health began to decline, and she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Before this diagnosis, Adelia had no previous health problems. She later learned her heart was functioning like the heart of a 90-year-old woman. But Adelia is only 21. Although doctors began aggressive treatments with hopes of stabilizing her condition, her heart was already severely damaged. Doctors have told Adelia she needs a heart transplant to survive.

In October, she underwent surgery to have a heart pump implanted to sustain her life while she waits for her transplant. She has also received a defibrillator implant to regulate her heart rhythm.

This young woman was once going to college, working as a cook and actively participating in her church events. However, her health has declined so greatly through this year that she can no longer enjoy the activities she once loved. Adelia wants nothing more than to have a healthy heart that will allow her to finish school and continue following her dreams. But she needs your help.

A heart transplant costs approximately $775,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Adelia faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Adelia has been at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) since August and must remain there for several months after her transplant. Prior to being transferred to MUSC, she spent three weeks at Providence Hospital in Columbia. She will continue to incur significant expenses for travel, food and lodging, adding to her financial strain.
