Transplant Type - Liver

Elena, a devoted wife and mother, was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease after a lengthy battle with health problems. Doctors said a liver transplant was her only hope at a second chance at life.

Thankfully, Elena's husband, Tarcizio, was a match and was eager to donate a portion of his liver to save her life. Elena received her lifesaving liver transplant in July 2003.

Even after her transplant, Elena faces health issues. Doctors are constantly changing her medication dosage to try and find the best combination, and this causes difficulty for Elena as her body adjusts. She is unable to stand for long periods of time and has trouble walking as a result of nerve damage she sustained from her original diagnosis of liver disease. Elena works when she's able, but her health prevents her from working full time.

Despite her continuing health problems, Elena remains positive about the future. She is thankful for her transplant and the new life it has given her. She especially enjoys the time she gets to spend with her four grandchildren. But she needs your help.

Even with health insurance, Elena's medical expenses are significant. For the rest of her life, she needs follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. During the next few years, it is estimated that Elena will need at least $20,000 just to cover the cost of medications.
