Transplant Type - Kidney
Several years ago, Robert noticed swelling in his feet and hands. This devoted husband, father and grandfather wasn't too concerned, but his wife insisted he see a doctor. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. He began dialysis treatments and was placed on the transplant waiting list.
Although it was difficult, Robert continued to work at a steel manufacturing plant while he was on dialysis. He received a kidney transplant in December 2004, but it wasn't as successful as doctors had hoped. After a year, his health problems returned. Unfortunately, his expensive medications took a toll on his family's finances, causing them to lose their home.
Robert's health continues to decline. Doctors say another kidney transplant is his only hope for a second chance at life. Despite his struggles, Robert remains positive about the future. A dedicated family man, he looks forward to the lifesaving transplant that will allow him to spend more time with his wife and high school sweetheart, Patricia. He would like nothing more than to have his health restored so he can watch his grandchildren grow up.
But he needs your help.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Robert faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. It is estimated that in the short term, Robert needs at least $40,000 to cover his medical expenses.
