Transplant Type - Liver

Joe, a devoted husband, father and grandfather went to the doctor in 2008 for a routine check-up. After a series of tests, he was diagnosed with liver cancer. This devastating diagnosis caught Joe and his family by surprise. Doctors said a liver transplant was his only hope for a second chance at life.

Fortunately, Joe received his lifesaving liver transplant in February 2009 and is recovering well.

Joe recently retired after working 30 years in an auto factory. Prior to his diagnosis, Joe enjoyed his retirement very much, spending his time watching wildlife on his 10.5 acre property, hunting, fishing and camping.

Despite his struggles, Joe has high hopes for the future and is thankful for the support of his family and friends. A dedicated family man, he hopes his transplant will allow him to spend more time with Rose, his wife of 30 years. He would like nothing more than the opportunity to watch his three grandchildren grow up.

But he needs your help.

Unfortunately, Joe's hope for a new life comes at a very high price. A liver transplant costs approximately $500,000, and that's only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Joe will face significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

It is estimated that in the short term, Joe needs at least $75,000 just to cover his medical expenses. Because the transplant took place more than 200 miles from his home, he is facing substantial travel and temporary housing expenses as he goes through treatment and recovery.
