Transplant Type - Heart

Ernest suffered multiple heart attacks and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2008. He received a pacemaker and defibrillator, which helped to manage his condition for a short time. Doctors tell him a heart transplant is his only hope for a second chance at life.

Ernest is two years older than the cutoff age to be listed for a transplant. However, because he is otherwise healthy, doctors believe he is a good candidate for the procedure and allowed him to be listed despite his age. Ernest currently requires a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which helps his heart pump blood throughout his body. He will be dependent on the LVAD until he receives his transplant, as his heart can no longer function on its own. Ernest's transplant will take place at Medical City Transplant Center in Dallas.

Although he faces a long road, Ernest remains positive. Prior to his illness, he spent hours with his grandchildren, picking them up from school and attending softball and soccer games. Ernest looks forward to the lifesaving transplant that will allow him more time with his wife, his 10 children, and his grandchildren.

A heart transplant costs approximately $650,000, and that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Ernest will face significant medical expenses. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.

It is estimated that in the short term, Ernest needs at least $25,000 just to cover the costs of his medical expenses.
