Transplant Type - Kidney

When Sandy delivered her second child in 1989, she found out that she only had one kidney. Though it was a surprise, her condition didn't cause any problems for several years. However, at her annual physical last May, she learned she was in Stage 2 renal failure. By October, it had progressed to end-stage renal failure. Doctors said a kidney transplant was her only hope for a second chance at life.

Thankfully, Sandy's 24-year old son was a match, and was eager to donate a kidney to save his mother's life. Sandy received her lifesaving kidney transplant in December 2008. She is grateful for her new lease on life, although she still faces a long road as she recovers.

Sandy has high hopes for the future. She looks forward to once again being active in the church she attends, especially working with the youth. She also plans to spend more time with her friends and family.

A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000, and that's only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Sandy faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

It is estimated that in the short term, Sandy needs at least $15,000 just to cover her medical expenses. She will be unable to work for several months as she recovers from her transplant, further adding to her financial burden.
