Transplant Type - Heart

Danice suffered a heart attack in 1995 at the age of 41. Due to the extensive damage it caused, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. For several years, medication, diet and exercise kept her condition under control.

Last year, despite diligently following her doctors' orders, she began to experience many health complications. The heart failure medication was no longer working. Doctors told her a heart transplant was her only hope for a second chance at life.

Thankfully, Danice received her lifesaving transplant in October 2008 at Seton Medical Center. She is grateful for the gift of life she's been given and wants to use her experience to encourage others to consider organ donation.

After transplantation, Danice has a long road ahead of her, both physically and financially.

The average heart transplant costs more than $600,000. Even with health insurance, Danice faces significant transplant-related expenses. She will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications alone can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. It is estimated that in the short term, Danice needs at least $25,000 just to cover the cost of medications and doctors' visits.
