Transplant Type - Heart

Karin was first diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2003. Despite many medications and surgeries, including two pacemakers and a defibrillator, Karin's health continued to decline. Her doctors said a heart transplant was her only hope.

Fortunately, Karin received her lifesaving transplant in October 2008, but she now faces tremendous financial burdens.

The average heart transplant costs approximately $600,000, and Karin's insurance covered only a portion of these expenses. She also will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications to maintain her new heart. The medications alone could cost as much as $5,000 each month, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Karin's illness has drastically altered her life. Prior to her transplant, she was constantly fatigued and suffered from shortness of breath, limiting her abilities to work and enjoy leisure activities. She only had the strength to work part-time, making these financial challenges even more overwhelming.
