Transplant Type - Heart

Meagan Shelby began experiencing shortness of breath in 2006, two months after giving birth to her daughter. Upon examination, doctors diagnosed Meagan with postpartum cardiomyopathy and hypertension. Her heart functions at only 10 to 15 percent, and doctors believe a heart transplant is her only hope for a second chance at life.

The average heart transplant costs approximately $650,000, and Meagan's health insurance will cover only a portion of these expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Meagan's declining health prevents her from working, making these financial obstacles even more overwhelming. She will also encounter travel expenses, as the hospital is more than two hours from her home.
