Transplant Type - Liver

Pamela was diagnosed with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver in 2007. She has a family history of liver disease and also suffers from portal hypertension and an enlarged spleen. She is currently waiting to be listed for a liver transplant.

The average liver transplant costs approximately $500,000, and Pamela's health insurance will cover only a portion of these expenses.

Once Pamela receives her transplant, she also will need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications can cost as much as $5,000 each month, and they are as essential to her survival as the transplant itself. Without them, her body will reject the new liver.
