Fundraisers in honor of kidney transplant patient, Toni Trujillo |
| Toni Trujillo, 38, needs a kidney transplant to survive. When she was 12, she came down with strep throat. Although it was unknown for a few years, the illness caused her to contract glomerulonephritis, a disease causing inflammation of the kidneys. |

Trujillo had her first kidney transplant in 1991, and she now needs another transplant. She has been on the transplant waiting list for three years, and currently endures dialysis treatments at home for 10 hours every night.
A kidney transplant costs approximately $250,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health coverage, Trujillo faces significant expenses related to her transplant. She will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. These medications can cost as much as $5,000 a month, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
To overcome these financial challenges, Trujillo turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.
Volunteers are planning two fundraisers to help Trujillo with her expenses. The first, a tattoo marathon, will take place Friday, Nov. 13 from 5 p.m. until midnight at ABC Bar, 50 N. Cameron Street in Mechanicsburg. This event is free to attend and will include a speaker discussing organ failure and transplantation.
Saturday, Nov. 14 volunteers will hold a tractor twang dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Newville Fairgrounds. Admission to the dance is $6.
