Abilene, Kan., Nov. 2, 2009 – Jerry Copenhaver, 58, needs a liver transplant to survive. After battling health problems for several years, Copenhaver was falsely diagnosed with hepatitis C. Later doctors discovered he had a life-threatening liver disease, and told him a liver transplant was necessary for his survival.
Copenhaver faces significant expenses related to his transplant. A liver transplant costs approximately $500,000, and that is only the beginning. Vital anti-rejection medications can cost as much as $5,000 each month, and he must take them every day for the rest of his life. It is estimated that in the short term, Copenhaver needs at least $75,000 just to cover his medical expenses.
Copenhaver turned to the National Foundation for Transplants for assistance in alleviating some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.
Volunteers are planning a chili feed and dance Saturday, Nov. 14 from 6 p.m. to midnight at Eagles Aerie, 207 Eagle Drive in Abilene.
Admission is $8 for both the chili feed and dance, which includes homemade chili and cinnamon rolls, a 50/50 raffle, and entertainment by Good Tyme Rock ‘N Roll. Admission for just the chili feed is $5. For more information, please contact Tabetha Wenger at tabetha.copenhaver@yahoo.com or 785-608-2422.
To make a tax-deductible donation in honor of Copenhaver, please send a contribution to the NFT Kansas Liver Fund, 5350 Poplar Ave., Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119.
