Naches, Wash., Nov. 3, 2009 – Sandy Morris’ life is about to change. In October, she began the process of receiving a bone marrow transplant, which takes several weeks to complete. Friends and family are planning fundraisers to help with her expenses.
Morris, 55, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in January. Doctors said a bone marrow transplant was essential to her survival.
The transplant is expected to cost approximately $325,000. Even with health insurance, she faces significant medical expenses. Because the hospital is 150 miles away from her home, she will incur travel and lodging expenses.
Morris is a secretary for the school system in Naches, but her declining health has prevented her from working for the past 7 months. She had 15 years of unused sick leave and vacation time, but that will run out in November. She will be unable to work for at least four months following the transplant as she recovers.
To help alleviate some of these financial burdens, Morris turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.
“We work with patients like Sandy every day, and it’s heartbreaking to see patients struggle with these enormous expenses,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “At NFT, we help patients raise funds so they can focus on their health without worrying about financial obstacles.”
Volunteers are planning a spaghetti dinner Friday, Nov. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Naches Middle School, 32 Shafer Ave. Admission is $6 for adults, and $4 for children. Beverages are available for purchase, and a silent auction will be held during the event.
