Guthrie, Okla., Sept. 28, 2009 – Volunteers are planning a golf tournament to help liver transplant patient Oral Semore with his expenses.

Semore, 51, was diagnosed with liver cancer in Dec. 2008. Doctors said there was no hope and that Semore had only a few months left. In January, they said chemotherapy may extend his life, and he underwent four types of chemotherapy. To his family’s surprise and delight, the treatment helped, and doctors recently told Semore he is a candidate for a liver transplant.

A liver transplant costs approximately $500,000, and that is only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Semore faces significant expenses related to his transplant. Vital anti-rejection medications can cost as much as $5,000 each month, and he must take them every day for the rest of his life. Semore’s declining health prevents him from working, adding to his financial strain.

Semore turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance in alleviating some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.

The golf tournament will take place Saturday, Oct. 24 at Cimmarron National Golf Course. Check-in is at 9 a.m., and the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Admission is $60/person or $240 for a four-person team and includes green fee, cart and lunch. Deadline for registration is Oct. 10.

The event will include a raffle and silent auction. Players will have a chance to win a truck from John Vance Motors on a par-3.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for $100. For more information or to become a sponsor, contact Brandy Semore at 405-412-9560 or bsemore@cox.net.

To make a tax-deductible donation in honor of Semore, please send a contribution to the NFT Oklahoma Liver Fund, 5350 Poplar Ave., Suite 430, Memphis, TN 38119. Please write “in honor of Oral Semore” on the memo line. Secure donations also can be made online at www.transplants.org. Donors should click on “Patients We Help” to locate Semore.
