Bake sale in honor of man awaiting liver and kidney transplant |
| Billy Marr has experienced major health issues for many years. Since 1986, he has undergone five transplants, including three kidney transplants and two liver transplants. Doctors have now told Marr he needs another liver and kidney transplant to survive. |

A liver and kidney transplant costs approximately $760,000. Even with health coverage, Marr faces significant medical expenses related to his transplant. For the rest of his life he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications can cost up to $5,000 per month, and they are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Marr turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance in alleviating some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.
“Many people don’t think about the long-term expenses for transplant patients like Billy,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “They only think about the cost of the transplant itself, but the reality is that these patients face a lifetime of costly medications and follow-up care. At NFT, we help raise funds for these patients so they can fully enjoy their second chance at life.”
Friends and family are working with NFT to plan a bake sale Friday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nacogdoches Walmart, 4810 North Street. Cakes and pies will be sold for $15. Other items, such as cookies and brownies, will range in price from $2 to $5. Cookbooks, candles and teddy bears also will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit NFT in honor of Marr.
